Piraeus-based Kyklades Maritime Corporation, one of Greece’s most respected independent tanker owners and operators, has partnered with global maritime payments provider ShipMoney to introduce digital crew payment solutions across 18 of its vessels.

The agreement will see ShipMoney’s platform used for crew wage advances and payouts across a multinational crew of approximately 500 seafarers drawn from Greece, the Philippines and the Balkans. The move replaces a manual, multi-party coordination process, giving crew members faster and more direct access to their earnings while at sea, and significantly reducing the administrative workload for both

vessel and office teams.

Previously, a crew member requesting an advance, particularly close to a port call or outside normal processing schedules, could require coordination between several parties before funds were released. For seafarers needing urgent access to money for a family matter ashore, that delay was keenly felt. ShipMoney removes that friction entirely.

Capt. Petros Komitopoulos, Manager Manning Dept. at Kyklades Maritime Corporation, said: “The well-being of our seafarers is always at the heart of what we do at Kyklades Maritime. Our partnership with ShipMoney gives our crew greater flexibility and direct access to their earnings while at sea, and the positive response from our seafarers confirms that we are moving in the right direction.”

Stuart Ostrow, President of ShipMoney, said: “Kyklades Maritime are exactly the kind of partner that means something to us. They are serious operators with serious standards, and when a company of their standing

in the Greek shipping community chooses ShipMoney, it matters. But what matters more is what this means for the 500 seafarers on those vessels. These are men and women working hard, far from home, who deserve to be paid simply, safely and on their own terms. That is what we are here for.”

The partnership reflects growing momentum among Greek shipowners towards digital crew payment infrastructure, as the industry moves away from cash-based systems that have long created friction for seafarers managing remittances across multiple currencies and banking environments. Kyklades Maritime’s decision to prioritise the crew experience as the primary measure of success in the transition is consistent with its long-standing commitment to the highest standards of safety, operational excellence and seafarer welfare.

bound4blue has received a Design Assessment from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore for its flagship Model 3-24 eSAIL®, developed to maximise the contribution of wind propulsion on larger vessels.

Presented during a handover ceremony at SMM 2026 in Hamburg, the assessment confirms that the design has been independently reviewed against Bureau Veritas' technical requirements, providing further confidence for shipowners looking to deploy proven, scalable wind propulsion solutions.

Market moves

bound4blue’s eSAIL® suction sail technology has made significant strides forward across multiple shipping segments in the space of the past year, with more than 50 units now ordered and installations completed onboard 13 vessels.

The Model 3 range spans heights from 24 metres to 36 metres, with the 3-24 becoming the first commercial installation earlier this year onboard Klaveness Combination Carriers' newbuild MV Baltazar. The sails feature an expanded surface area and optimised aerodynamic profile, ensuring even the largest ships can take advantage of compelling commercial and regulatory gains.

Confidence counts

“As the market matures, confidence becomes just as important as innovation,” says José Miguel Bermúdez, CEO and co-founder of bound4blue. “So, as wind takes its place within mainstream fleet investment, independent assessments really do play an increasingly important role in differentiating and substantiating technical solutions.

“Here at bound4blue it’s been a focus since day one. We are committed to engaging with leading Class societies to demonstrate the quality and potential of our proprietary technology. By doing so we provide owners, yards and wider industry stakeholders with the reassurance they need to embrace the wind revolution and unlock significant environmental and business benefits. We’re delighted to achieve this latest recognition from Bureau Veritas as we continue to cement our position as a trusted industry partner.”

Supporting progress

The Model 3-24 builds on bound4blue's proven Model 2 platform, retaining the company's hallmark technical simplicity for straightforward installation and autonomous operation.

eSAILs® work by utilising boundary layer suction to draw air across an aerodynamically optimised surface and generate propulsive force up to seven times greater than rigid sails of the same size, while requiring far less maintenance. The result is significantly lower fuel consumption, reduced CO₂ emissions and improved operational efficiency. In addition, the non-ATEX technology supports compliance with a growing range of environmental regulations, including FuelEU Maritime and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), while contributing towards improved Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) performance and EEXI compliance.

Speaking of the Design Assessment process, David Barrow, SVP for Western Europe and Americas at Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, comments: “Wind propulsion is becoming an increasingly important element of the maritime industry's decarbonisation journey, and independent technical assessment helps provide confidence as these technologies continue to mature and scale. Through this Design Assessment, Bureau Veritas is pleased to support bound4blue in advancing safe and reliable innovation, helping shipowners reduce emissions while maintaining robust technical standards."

Plug and play

eSAILs® have emerged as a solution of choice for many of shipping’s leading names, including companies such as Maersk Tankers, Eastern Pacific Shipping, Odfjell, Louis Dreyfus Company, and many more.

Designed as a simple, plug-and-play system for both retrofits and newbuilds, bound4blue suction sails operate alongside conventional propulsion systems while also supporting the adoption of future fuels such as methanol and ammonia, helping shipowners integrate complementary sustainability solutions into their decarbonisation strategies.

eSAILs® are market proven to deliver double-digit fuel savings, with typical payback periods of less than five years.

RINA has unveiled Mermaid, a future-ready ship propulsion concept designed to help shipowners reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions, improve operational resilience and protect long-term asset value while remaining flexible as the maritime industry’s decarbonisation pathway evolves.

Mermaid expands the role of a vessel’s highly efficient two-stroke main engine beyond propulsion, enabling it to become the primary source of onboard power while reducing reliance on less efficient auxiliary engines. The concept combines a shaft generator, propeller shaft clutch and battery energy storage in a new propulsion architecture that improves efficiency without committing owners to a particular fuel pathway.

When a vessel arrives in port, the propeller is disconnected while the main engine continues generating electrical power. Rather than relying on auxiliary engines to meet onboard demand, Mermaid enables the main engine to supply electrical power directly or charge the batteries. Once charged, the batteries provide onboard power, allowing the main engine to operate more efficiently while reducing fuel consumption, emissions and operating costs.

Mermaid also supports a more optimised propulsion system. As slow steaming becomes more common, many vessels spend much of their operating life operating well below the speeds they were originally designed to achieve. By combining aux engines with battery energy storage in a hybrid propulsion scheme, the concept enables propulsion power to be better matched to real operating conditions while maintaining operational flexibility and safety. This reduces the need to install excess engine capacity while providing an additional

source of electrical power that enhances resilience during critical operations.

The benefits are significant. RINA&’s analysis indicates that Mermaid can reduce fuel consumption by more than 1,000 tonnes per year in some applications. By lowering fuel use and emissions, the concept also reduces future compliance costs while helping shipowners protect long-term asset value. Mermaid is fuel agnostic, giving owners greater flexibility as future regulations and technologies continue to evolve. Thanks to the batteries, the concept may also deliver important safety benefits by enhancing onboard power resilience and

reducing the risk of power loss, both for propulsion and electric, during critical operations.

“The challenge facing shipowners today is not simply choosing a fuel, particularly as future solutions may merge that we are not even considering today - said Antonios Trakakis, Energy Transition Solutions Technical Director at RINA -. It is preparing a vessel for a future that nobody can predict with certainty. Ships being ordered today will still be operating well into the 2050s, so today’s decisions need to remain commercially and technically sound for decades.

The Mermaid concept delivers immediate operational and commercial benefits while reducing the need for costly modifications in the future. Instead of optimising vessels for a single decarbonisation scenario, it provides a flexible platform that can adapt as technologies, fuels and regulations evolve.

Importantly, Mermaid delivers value regardless of how the maritime energy transition unfolds.

“Today there is no consensus on which fuels will dominate the future of shipping – said Trakakis -. Owners are being presented with multiple possible pathways, each carrying different risks and uncertainties. Mermaid was designed to work whatever the future brings. If the world changes, the ship is ready. If it does not, the economics still work.”

The concept is applicable across a wide range of vessel types, including tankers, bulk carriers and container ships, and is currently being developed into a fully detailed design following encouraging feedback from both shipowners and shipyards.

By focusing on adaptability rather than a single fuel pathway, Mermaid demonstrates how ship design can help owners reduce costs today while preparing confidently for the uncertainties of tomorrow. The concept reflects RINA’s commitment to developing practical engineering solutions that enable shipowners to balance commercial performance with long- term decarbonisation objectives.

The Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders of PPA S.A. was held in accordance with the applicable procedures, with the participation of shareholders representing 81.78% of the Company’s share capital.

During the meeting, it was clarified that the amendment of the relevant articles was necessary in order to align the Company's Articles of Association with modern business practices, the strategic evolution of the port sector, supply chain (logistics) and infrastructure sectors, as well as the Company' s long-term growth objectives.

The General Assembly approved the relevant amendments by a vote of 99.94%.

In his statement, the Company’s Chairman, Mr. Han Chao, noted: “Building on the consistently growth trajectory of PPA S.A., we are modernizing our Articles of Association with the aim of creating the necessary conditions for the further development of PPA S.A. and the implementation of the Company’s long-term strategy.

A key priority remains the advancement of the investments and projects envisaged and approved under the Master Plan of the Port. Establishing a subsidiary company contributes to the further enhancement of supply chain (logistics) services, a sector of particular importance for the future of the company.

At the same time, the provisions concerning the possibility of acquiring interests in companies in Greece or abroad do not relate to any specific project or investment plan at present.

They establish a modern and flexible framework that will enable the Company to assess opportunities compatible with its strategy and long-term objectives.

Today’s amendment of the Articles of Association therefore represents another step forward, strengthening our ability to plan and invest with a long-term perspective, for the benefit of the Company, its shareholders and the Greek economy.”
