Attica Group signed an agreement with Stena RoRo for the charter with purchase option of 2 E-Flexer vessels, to be built by Stena RoRo at the CMI Jinling Weihai Shipyard, China. The 2 new vessels with an overall length of 240m, are the largest RoPax vessels ever ordered by a Greek shipping company. With passenger capacity of 1,500 pax and 3,320 lane meters cargo decks (approximately 200 freight units) per vessel for the transportation of private vehicles, trucks and trailers, the new vessels will enhance significantly the overall transport capacity in the Adriatic routes.
The new vessels are Methanol ready and carry a Battery notation, with engines that are designed to operate with 3 different fuel types in view of required flexibility for future requirements. At the same time, they are designed and equipped with state-of-the-art technology to optimize fuel consumption alongside a series of high efficiency technical features that will contribute to the reduction of the Group’s GHG emissions per transport work by 60% compared to existing vessels.
The agreement provides for the construction by Stena RoRo of two vessels, on behalf of Attica Group, under a 10-year bareboat charter scheme, including a purchase option as from the end of the 5th year of hire period.
Upon the delivery of the 2 new vessels which has been scheduled for April and August 2027 respectively, Attica Group plans to proceed with a fleet redeployment which will allow Attica to further reduce its environmental footprint through the retirement of older vessels and the decrease of the average age of its fleet.
The innovative design of the vessels is the result of the collaboration between the Stena RoRo and Attica’s shipbuilding teams on the basis of the successful E-Flexer model, resulting in a modern and environmentally efficient vessel with significant reduction in GHG emissions.

Just before the start of one of the most prestigious shipping events in the world, Posidonia, RINA’s Hellenic Advisory Committee (HAC) convened once again to discuss the progression of decarbonization within the shipping industry and its challenges. This event signified a notable gathering of industry leaders and stakeholders, emphasizing RINA’s dedication to innovation and sustainability in the maritime sector. The meeting was followed by RINA’s Posidonia Reception.
In his opening remarks, Committee Chairman George Youroukos, owner of Technomar Shipping Inc., underscored RINA’s significant achievements in 2023. Notably, RINA is currently classing over 79 million Gross Tonnage for approximately 9,700 vessels of various types. The RINA Greek owned fleet has seen remarkable growth, doubling in size from 2021 to 2023, now encompassing over 720 ships and 23 million Gross Tonnage. Since January 2024, the
International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has appointed RINA’s Roberto Cazzulo as its new Chairman.
Following the Chairman’s address, Ugo Salerno, the Executive Chairman of RINA, delivered a pivotal speech. He focused on the recent integration of Fondo Italiano d’ Investimento into RINA’s shareholder structure, a strategic move designed to fortify RINA’s growth both organically and through acquisitions, thereby enhancing its global presence and capabilities.
The Executive Chairman also had the pleasure of discussing Carlo Luzzato’s appointment as the new CEO and General Manager, a decision anticipated to infuse the organization with renewed leadership and vision.
Paolo Moretti, CEO of RINA Services, took the stage to present RINA’s notable achievements in 2023. These figures highlight RINA’s substantial impact and influence within the Greek maritime sector, showcasing its strong performance and strategic partnerships.
Adding to the forward-looking discussions, Faidon Tomazos from Cass Technava offered insights into new building projects, underscoring RINA’s role in spearheading advanced maritime infrastructure. His presentation highlighted the new building activity primarily of Greek shipowners, featuring innovative developments and collaborations poised to set new industry standards.
Antonis Trakakis, Technical Director at RINA, discussed decarbonizing the iron ore supply chain, emphasizing sustainable practices and technological innovations. Highlighting the Clydebank Declaration from COP26, aiming for net-zero maritime emissions by 2050 through Green Corridors—routes enabling zero-carbon fuels—he noted Western Australia’s significant role as the leading iron ore producer with over 4,000 annual cargoes. Trakakis concluded that achieving IMO 2050 targets is feasible, even with fossil fuels, advocating for immediate action towards near net-zero carbon while maintaining the “green premium” low. He stressed that onshore solutions must drive onboard implementation, with new ships designed for flexibility to adapt to future technological advancements.

Columbia Group (CG) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Cyprus (UCY) to launch initiatives aimed at expanding educational, research, development and business opportunities for students.
This MOU will further solidify the longstanding relationship between UCY and CG, fostering the development of various initiatives, events, and programmes.

130 Greek Nautical High School students participated in a series of seminars and workshops on ocean and climate awareness and the blue economy as part of the “Nauticinblu” Project, enhancing their understanding of the complex relationship between economic growth, biodiversity impacts, and the needed transition to more sustainable operations.
Nauticinblu involves Nautical Institutes in Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Spain and is run by the Italian non-profit environmental organization Marevivo, with the support of the MSC Foundation of the MSC Group. In Greece, it is implemented by the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA), showcasing the strength of this partnership in driving environmental education and sustainability in the maritime sector.
Specifically in Greece, 100 students from the 1st Vocational School of Keratsini, Athens and 30 students from Tsakos Enhanced Education Nautical School (TEENS) in Chios took part in engaging indoor and outdoor activities that covered some of the most important subjects related to the sea, with expert lecturers, experiential workshops and beach cleanups.
At the 1st Vocational High School of Keratsini Attica, the students participated in a comprehensive five-day program, including project introduction, discussions on marine pollution and employment opportunities in blue economy, a beach cleanup at Neraki, Nea Peramos, a marine litter monitoring exercise, a mentoring session with a maritime expert, and a visit to member – company, Hellenic Environmental Center (HEC), for an in-depth look at waste management. The program concluded with a design thinking exercise focused on transforming waste into useful materials, emphasizing circular economy principles.
Accordingly, HELMEPA visited the award-winning Tsakos Enhanced Education Nautical School in Chios, the first non-profit model Nautical Lyceum, where students engaged in a series of activities over five days. The program began with an introduction to the project, followed by discussions on ocean literacy and marine pollution. Students participated in a beach cleanup at Karfas beach, recorded litter in real-time, and attended mentoring sessions on careers in shipping and ocean sciences. Unique to this program, students conducted a survey on local perceptions of climate change in collaboration with the innovative grassroots initiative “Chios Climate Chance” part of HELMEPA’s ongoing program on the island. As a closing event, students created a collective artwork inspired by the ONLY ONE exhibition, which was hosted at the school, to enhance ocean awareness. This artwork is now displayed on the school’s premises.

Using real-time analytics, ABB’s turn-key solution based on Arkitech’s ARK-M20 system enables up to 12 percent increase in chiller efficiency on board the luxury MSC Cruises ship
The gains equate to 100 MW in monthly energy savings, reducing operating costs and enhancing sustainability on board the 15-year old vessel
A collaboration between ABB and Arkitech has brought significant efficiency gains for the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system on board MSC Magnifica. Using artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze data from over 1,500 sensors on the MSC Cruises ship, this technology enables up to 12 percent increase in chiller efficiency to achieve monthly energy savings of 100 MW by the 15-year old ship while maintaining optimal air-handling unit performance.
The HVAC systems onboard cruise ships and ferries are often one of the largest energy consumer after propulsion, making energy efficiency a priority. The ABB solution based on ARK-M20 is designed to minimize the cost and environmental impact of this system. It works by continuously optimizing the HVAC system’s temperature set point in response to variable conditions including weather, seawater temperature, mobility, proportion of passenger capacity filled, time of day and position in port or at sea.
“Controlling the most energy-demanding processes onboard – propulsion, hotel operations and HVAC – is increasingly important,” said Ivana Melillo, Head of Energy Efficiency, MSC Cruise Management (UK) Limited. “Reducing energy needs can decrease fuel consumption and emissions. Thanks to the project, we expect to save 10-12 percent of HVAC energy consumption, equating to nearly 1 ton of fuel saved daily. The greatest emissions savings come from the fuel we don't use.”
“As maritime organizations seek to enhance operational efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint, innovative technologies like ARK-M20 are well positioned to support this growing demand,” said Alessandro De Santis, Manager – Service Area South Europe, ABB Marine & Ports. “Our collaboration with Arkitech and MSC Cruises emphasizes our commitment to delivering measurable energy savings and operational improvements through technology. The project’s success is yet another testament to our leadership in advancing efficiency and sustainability in the maritime industry.”
Supplied in a modular plug-and-play configuration, the ARK-M20 system can be installed seamlessly during normal vessel operations to offer a platform to monitor vessel air quality. As well as providing a safe and comfortable environment for passengers and crew, optimizing HVAC performance contributes towards compliance with regulations such as the International Maritime Organization’s Carbon Intensity Indicator.

With the cooperation of the University of Piraeus the graduation ceremony of the postgraduate administration program in "maritime science and technology" was held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at the Navy Cadets Academy.
The commanding officer of the naval cadet academy congratulated the 52 graduates of the program and focused on the Academy’s Extroversion, inviting them to exploit the knowledge they received in the program.
The Rector of University of Piraeus Mr. Michael Sfakianakis emphasized on the study synergies with the Army’s Staff which aim at the development of the skills of the officers.
The dean of Piraeus University's shipping school, Angelos Pantouvakis, in his speech, exhorted the graduates to be alert to perceive the changes in the business and shipping environment and after thinking and studying to make the right decisions.
The Director of the Program I. Theotokas Professor of the University of Piraeus underlined that knowledge is acquired with effort and cannot be bought, calling the graduates to claim with this resource a brilliant career in the field of shipping and the navy. He also pointed out that they have to follow the principles of responsibility, cooperation and consistency.

The handover ceremony took place at the RINA Booth during the Posidonia international shipping exhibition in Athens.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from Technomar, RINA, and Global Ship Lease. Mr. Thomas Lister, CEO of Global Ship Lease, Mr. Paminos Youroukos, Strategic Planning & Compliance Executive at Technomar Shipping Inc. and Aggelos Karantonis, Vessels IT Manager at Technomar Shipping Inc, were present to receive the certificate. From RINA, Mr. Giosuè Vezzuto, Marine Executive Vice President, and Mr. Spyridon Zolotas, South Europe & MEA Marine Senior Director, officiated the event.
The “RINA Cyber Security - Verification for ships in service” is a testament to Technomar’s commitment to managing cyber risks with appropriate policies, procedures, and technical controls onboard. This certification ensures alignment with IMO, IACS requirements, and industry best practices. It is particularly noteworthy as it addresses the operational need for ships in service, which will continue to be in use for many years, to have a similar level of cybersecurity protection as newbuilds.

Piraeus Port Authority S.A., adhering to systematic rules, standards and initiatives for environmental, social and corporate governance, which are embedded in its strategy for the development and ongoing modernization of the Port of Piraeus, has published its 2023 Sustainability Report.
While achieving its core business objectives of establishing a modern, resilient and competitive company that offers high-level services across all port activities, PPA S.A. simultaneously and systematically implements its ESG action plan. This plan ensures that actions are balanced across the three pillars on an annual basis.
Indicatively, in 2023, the company contributed over 500 thousand euros to corporate responsibility initiatives and social support actions, while the total energy consumption decreased by 7% compared to 2022.
The CEO of PPA S.A., Mr. Su Xudong, underlined the importance of ESG reporting, stating that for ensuring a strong and resilient company over time, sustainable development is the only path. According to the CEO, economic growth and progress must necessarily go hand in hand with environmental protection and giving back to society. Therefore, the company has long been implementing its comprehensive program, which includes preventive measures for the protection of the environment, sustainable practices, as well as various actions to support society and vulnerable individuals, and to enhance and develop employees through transparency and good corporate governance.

Finally, it is highlighted that PPA S.A. has received recognition for the third consecutive year as one of Greece's most sustainable companies from the QualityNet Foundation, based on its annual assessment and performance in the three ESG pillars.
