Atlas Maritime Ltd., in collaboration with Daehan Shipbuilding, announced the naming of 4 new state-of-the-art LR2 115,000 DWT tankers, dual fuel LNG ready, with the most fuel efficient (super eco) engine and the least environmental impact. Stavanger Star, Oslo Star, Copenhagen Star and Athenian Star. These vessels, delivered under a strategic partnership with European Maritime Finance (EMF), mark a significant milestone for Atlas Maritime’s fleet expansion.

Mrs. Marietta Chrousala Patitsa, wife of Mr. Patitsas was the sponsor and godmother of Stavanger Star and Miss. Margo Patitsa, his daughter, of the Athenian Star. Project Connect, the non-profit organization dedicated to youth empowerment and maritime education, successfully held its annual “KICK START THE NEW YEAR” event on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

Emphasizing this year’s theme, “FOCUS & ACTION,” the event took place in a dynamic “phygital” (physical and digital) format, hosted by Athens College – Bodosakeio in Kantza, Pallini, one of the first seven schools to enroll in Project Connect’s Adopt a Ship program, in presence of U.S. Ambassador to Greece, George J. Tsunis. Present at the event were, also, among others President of Athens College, Dr Pollalis and Mr Kalogeras, Athens College Elementary School Principal.

Mr. Chrysostomos Lefteratos, a dedicated Athens College teacher and one of the first educators to adopt the Adopt a Ship program, warmly welcomed students and guests. Athens College has been a consistent participant since the program’s introduction to Greek classrooms in January 2019. Mr. Lefteratos showcased a video highlighting students’ shipping-related projects, and he also presented a heartwarming reading of an e-mail  exchange between a student and a ship captain, emphasizing the unique interaction at the program’s core. Two students, wearing captain’s hats provided by Project Connect, read aloud a letter exchanged between a Maran Tankers vessel and an elementary class in Davlia, Central Greece.

Mr. John Xylas, Union of Greek Shipowners’ representative/Treasurer, Founding Member of Project Connect, shipowner, and recently elected Chairman of INTERCARGO, praised the program for bridging Greek Shipping with the classroom: “We are grateful to the teachers for their dedication. Through ‘Adopt a Ship,’ students truly grasp the value of the seafarer’s profession, and they learn practical skills along the way.”

Dr. Adamantia Spanaka, Project Connect’s Educators Consultant, guided the attendees through the key elements of the Adopt a Ship initiative. She explained how the program fosters interdisciplinary learning by using captains’ responses as the basis for lessons in geography, English writing, literature, history, and more, illustrating the program’s practical learning opportunities.

Project Connect’s Founder & Director, Ms. Irene Notias, welcomed and expressed her gratitude for the Ambassador’s attendance: “We feel so fortunate that the Ambassador chose to address our young minds today, in one of his last public interaction to his post. His passion and commitment set a wonderful example—focus, action, effort, and love for one’s country can take anyone a long way forward. This is truly an inspiring way to start the New Year.”

U.S. Ambassador to Greece, George J. Tsunis, during his keynote speech shared his personal journey—rooted in Greek heritage—on becoming an Ambassador and underscored the importance of shipping to the global economy and to Greece. His address reached 2,185 pupils and 108 teachers from 51 elementary, 19 secondary schools, and 8 Nautical Vocational High Schools (EPAL) across Greece, as well as participating schools in Florida, USA.

In total, more than 4,200 pupils in 222 classes are enrolled in the Adopt a Ship program this school year. The pupils that missed this event will have a chance to view the recorded version.

“They are lucky to have the ‘Adopt a Ship’ program in their schools,” remarked Ambassador Tsunis. “My hope is that each of you will be inspired to pursue your dreams.”

Project Connect presented the Ambassador with handcrafted nautical gifts made by pupils of the 45th Elementary School of Thessaloniki, commemorating his involvement. The day concluded with uplifting and motivational sessions anchored by the theme “Focus & Action”. Life coach Michalis Fragkiadakis (FOS Breakthrough) led an engaging talk, “Opinion & Knowledge: Breaking Illusions,” encouraging students to challenge assumptions and explore personal growth. Dr. John Kalogerakis closed the event with “Kick Start the New Year with FOCUS & ACTION,” energizing everyone to pursue their New Year’s resolutions with confidence and determination.

This year, is the NPO’s 10th year anniversary and there will be many special events coming up.

The Cyprus Shipping Chamber’s Board of Directors has unanimously decided to appoint its current Deputy Director General / Marine Manager, Mr. Alexandros Josephides, as the next Director General. Mr. Josephides will succeed Mr. Thomas A. Kazakos, who is taking over as Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping in London, effective 1st April 2025.

Completing this year, a very productive 30 years-service with the Chamber, Mr. Josephides holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering. He started his career as a Mechanical Engineer in 1986 and worked in the US, Cyprus and Libya for different companies. In 1992 he joined the Cyprus Bureau of Shipping where he received training and worked as a Marine Surveyor. In 2015, following a proposal by the Cyprus Maritime Administration, he was appointed by IMO as “IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador” for Cyprus specifically tasked to promote maritime and seafaring professions to the young generation, a position he still holds today.

Mr. Josephides stated that: “I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me by the Board of Directors to serve as the next Director General of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber. As I approach 30 years of service with the Chamber, I am more committed to build upon the solid foundation already in place and advance the interests of Cyprus Shipping while upholding our industry’s vital role on the global stage. The world’s second largest third-party ship management company opens an office in Greece and announces a key leadership appointment in Japan to strengthen its client servicing in crucial markets

The Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology (H.I.M.T.) successfully organised the 18th Annual Conference of Marine Technology at the Eugenides Foundation on the 10th and 11th of December 2024. The event was a resounding success, attracting over 500 delegates.

The President of H.I.M.T., Dr. N. Liapis, opened the conference by emphasising its dual objectives: to present the latest developments and achievements in marine technology and to foster dialogue and collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutions. Among the key conclusions was the need for closer cooperation between the maritime industry and educational and research institutions to position Greece as a global hub for maritime technology. Dr. Liapis further highlighted that shipping is not

merely an observer of geopolitical developments but a pivotal player, capable of influencing and being influenced by such developments. He stressed that adaptability, innovation, and investment are the foundational pillars for the future of shipping.

The conference began with introductory remarks by the Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Mr. Stefanos Gkikas; the General Secretary for Research and Innovation, Dr. Tasos Gaitanis; the President of the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Vassilis Korkidis; the Rector of the National Technical University of Athens, Prof. Ioannis Chatzigeorgiou; and the Maritime Affairs Advisor of the Hellenic Shortsea Shipowners Association, Rear Admiral (Ret.) Alexandros Lagouros, who shared the perspectives of their respective organisations during the opening ceremony.

Throughout the two-day event, 10 scientific and research papers were presented, focusing on critical topics such as decarbonisation, alternative fuels, autonomous ships, advancements in ship engines and propulsion systems, and the evolving landscape of regulations, technologies, and market demands.

Delegates also had the opportunity to learn about emerging product trends and developments from both Greek and European researchers and internationally renowned companies.

The maritime industry’s participating companies showcased advanced technologies and smart applications, demonstrating their potential to shape and support both current and emerging trends.

During a panel discussion on the legal aspects of autonomous ships, Mr. Nikos Gerasimou underscored the importance of addressing the legal challenges associated with these vessels. He stated that autonomous ships represent a groundbreaking innovation poised to transform international maritime transport. He concluded that new international agreements will be essential to establish the legal framework necessary for the safe operation of autonomous ships.

A detailed roundtable discussion examined the risks posed to the shipping industry by geopolitical instability. Four main challenges were highlighted: threats to the freedom of the seas, sanctions, the rebalancing of energy and trade, and environmental issues. The significance of logistics and supply chains

was also emphasised, with participants agreeing that geopolitical developments remain unpredictable and become apparent only through long-term analysis.

On the second day of the conference, Dr. N. Liapis announced new scholarships offered by H.I.M.T. to promote education, one of the institute’s primary objectives. The announcement included the recipients of two scholarships for the academic year 2024–2025: one for the Master’s Programme (MSc) in Marine Engineering Management at BCA College and another for the Master’s Programme in Shipping Operations and Management at the University of Limassol (UoL).

Profile of Mr. Vassilios Demetriades

Mr. Vassilios Demetriades holds a BSc degree in Business Economics from Surrey University and an MSc degree in Management Science from the same University.

He served as Shipping Deputy Minister to the President of the Republic of Cyprus from July 2020 to February 2023. During his tenure, the strategic vision for Cyprus Shipping “SEA change 2030” was formulated, promoting an extroverted approach and a new philosophy and working structure within the Shipping Deputy Ministry (SDM). He initiated and delivered several sustainable actions such as the maritime passenger link between Cyprus and Greece reinstated after a 21-year hiatus, the formulation of Cyprus’ Maritime Spatial Plan, the setting up of the framework conditions for the digital transformation of the SDM. Mr. Vassilios Demetriades demonstrated leadership at global and EU level in effectively responding to crises (COVID-19 and Ukraine war) taking charge of key actions to enable safe crew changes, formulating and implementing a national vaccination plan to cover 40000 seafarers, facilitating a fast-track process for seafarers affected by the war in Ukraine to open bank accounts and access their salaries.

Prior to his appointment he served as a Policy Officer in the Directorate General of Mobility and Transport of the European Commission coordinating the EU maritime transport strategy and EU’s external maritime transport relations for 5 years, promoting the interests of the EU shipping industry at bilateral and multilateral level with major trading partners of the EU (US, China, India, Japan, Brazil, Iran). He was previously involved in the formulation and coordination of the European Sustainable Shipping Forum.

He has formerly served the Cyprus Public Administration as the Head of EU Affairs Unit at the Cypriot Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works formulating Cyprus’ national position to the EU on transport, telecommunications, shipping and integrated maritime policies and he was in charge of the overall coordination of the Cyprus Presidency to the EU pertaining to these areas.

Mr. Vassilios Demetriades served as the first Maritime Counsellor of Cyprus to the EU, from Cyprus accession to the EU in 2004 until the end of 2008, representing Cyprus to the EU in the fields of maritime transport, intermodal transport and networks, EU Integrated Maritime Policy, EU Space Policy, Global Navigation Satellite Systems. Previously he served the Maritime Administration of Cyprus from various posts putting forward visionary ideas and initiatives such as the Limassol Declaration on the EU Integrated Maritime Policy – one of the main priorities of the 2012 Cyprus Presidency to the Council of the EU.

Mr. Demetriades shares his richness of maritime knowledge and expertise, through lectures and articles, especially in the areas of maritime policy and strategic planning on a European and national level.

The Chios Marine Club’s Christmas and New Premises inauguration event took place on 18 December 2024 in Piraeus at its new address, 35-39 Akti Miaouli at Lemos Maritime Building. The celebration of the new premises was accompanied by the Christmas gathering for members and guests of the Club.

The Inauguration ceremony began with the traditional blessing of new premises by Father Andreas, archpriest of Saint Nicholas Church Piraeus. The President of Chios Marine Club Capt. Antonis Pitsilos welcomed the sponsors who contributed to the renovation of the premises, and all participants. He pointed out that the Club has been active for 25 years. The acquisition of new offices was a "Vision that became a Reality". He declared: “Our goal was to create an elegant and attractive place for our members to visit more often and this will help us to increase the number of new members.”

This year, the CONNECT CV-HR PLATFORM recorded significant growth, reaching a total of 71 new registrations. Among them, 4 young professionals successfully secured positions in reputable companies within the maritime industry, such as Pleiades Shipping, Marine Plus, Mylaki Shipping Agency, and Bernhard Schulte. This achievement underscores the role of our platform as a vital link between young talent and the maritime sector.

The “Adopt a Ship” maritime educational program in Greek schools enjoyed another expanding year!  One hundred ninety-seven Greek teachers are currently and consistently teaching over 4200 pupils about geography, Greek history of Shipping and its significance to the Greek and global economy, English Language, commerce and trade, life at sea, and empathy, thru this program by NPO, PROJECT CONNECT. 

Specifically, two hundred and twenty-two classes of one hundred-thirty participating schools have been exchanging over 300 e-mail communications with 150 vessels of 45 Greek and non-Greek shipowning companies in the Adopt a Ship program.

Twenty-three of the schools are Nautical Vocational High Schools whose pupils state they are more assured than ever now that they are on right path to become captains and engineers because of their participation and the Captains and engineers engagement with them in the program.

The NPO first introduced it to Greece in 2018 with seven schools and seven vessels of Ms Notias bunker client owners. Then in 2020 with the suggestion of the then Minister of Education, Mrs Kerameos, she and her team took it nationwide.  Managing it with tremendous success, it is now in Florida’s Hellenic Charter Schools, in U.S.A., Plato Academy.
